How secure is cellular out-of-band management?
One of the first questions customers ask us when discussing cellular out-of-band management is “How secure is this connection?”. “Is this link exposed to the internet?” The answer is NO, not if you choose an enterprise plan with a major carrier like ATT or Verizon. Major carriers offer a variety of enterprise grade Machine to Machine (M2M) private IP services that serve a VPN routing and forwarding (VRF) to the Opengear cellular end point. Next step is encrypting the actual data over the VRF cellular link. Opengear cellular out-of-band solutions are designed with security in mind, features such as in-built enterprise class firewall, FIPS 140-2 module, SSH v2, SSLv3 protocols, OpenVPN, IPSec, RADIUS SecurID, IP Filtering and per port access list to give greater control over out-of-band connections.
The second question we typically hear is “how much does this cost?” The M2M data plans are more secure and economical than your traditional data plan, for example this is the Verizon M2M pricing breakout. Keep in mind this is pooled data, if you have 100 sites with a 1MB plan you effectively have 100MB to share across your out-of-band network.
And this is M2M pricing from ATT
Managing distributed network infrastructure is hard enough. A cellular out-of-band management solution should be a secure solution that deploys quickly, begins working immediately, is simple to use and manage, and is cost effective.
