Fast Growing University of Illinois Data Center Taps Opengear for Out-Of-Band Access

Opengear (, a leading provider of next generation console server and KVM over IP solutions, today announced that the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, Campus Information Technology and Educational Services (CITES), is using the Opengear CM4148 to manage all of the equipment in its data center.

“We had been searching for an out-of-band solution for our data center, which over time had become increasingly dense with servers. Security concerns led us to code our own front-end application after discovering the economical cost and the port-density of the CM4148,” said Michael Tipsword of the CITES Data Center Services group. “Opengear console devices have much more functionality than one would imagine, and the firmware updates are provided in a timely manner, keeping our console service safe and secure. The Opengear CM4148 was the perfect solution for our out-of-band access.”

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign was founded in 1867 and was one of the original 37 public land-grant institutions created after President Lincoln signed the Morrill Act in 1862. It has over 41,000 students, 16 Colleges and instructional units and one of the largest public library collections in the world. The campus network has 70,000 computer connections in over 130 buildings and 76% of the classrooms offer wireless connections.

“The University of Illinois was an early adopter of the CM4148 and has benefited from a high–density console server at a low cost per port, with the benefits of a broad feature set and a flexible open source platform,” said Todd Rychecky, vice president of sales at Opengear. “Universities expect maximum up-time and reliability when they are implementing an out-of-band access solution for their students and faculty, Opengear understands this and aims to advance the console server market to provide the best in reliability for mission critical applications.”
